2nd Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia

2nd Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia

The 2nd Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia was held at CaixaForum in Madrid, Spain, from 26 to 27 April 2023. It not only built on the momentum generated by the first Global Forum in Barcelona in 2020 but also leveraged the attention of the pandemic to argue for urgent actions to reduce child pneumonia deaths. These include full coverage of the pneumonia-fighting vaccines (e.g., PCV, pertussis, Hib, and measles), reductions in wasting, improvements in air quality, as well as rapid access to diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics and oxygen as part of strong primary health care systems.

The two-day event served as a platform for 38 new and ambitious political commitments to accelerate introduction and scale up of these lifesaving interventions. Representatives from the Spanish Government, leading health ministry officials from countries with high burdens of child pneumonia,* donor governments, foundations, NGOs, companies, and academic institutions came together in-person to rejuvenate the fight to reduce child pneumonia deaths and boost national child survival progress.

The 2nd Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia was supported by the ”la Caixa” Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in collaboration with UNICEF and the organizations who co-hosted the inaugural Global Forum.

*Burkina Faso, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Peru, Sierra Leone, Somalia, and South Sudan
