New data, released in the January 2011 supplement to the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, show the striking effects of vaccination: in the countries studied (United States, El Salvador, Belgium, and Australia), hospitalizations and clinic visits for rotavirus diarrhea have declined by a tremendous amount (ranging from 60 percent to as much as 94 percent).
Reductions in rotavirus disease have also been noted among older, unvaccinated children in some countries, suggesting that vaccination of young infants is protecting the larger population by reducing rotavirus circulation in the community—a phenomenon called “herd immunity.”
