Pneumonia kills nearly 1.6 million children under five annually worldwide. An estimated 98 percent of children who die of pneumonia live in developing countries. Dr Dorothy Esangbedo, President, Paediatric Association of Nigeria, in a statement on World Pneumonia Day disclosed that, according to 2008 estimates, about 177,000 children under the age of five died of pneumonia in Nigeria.
