The public health community has known for a long time that vaccines are one of the best investments in health. A few doses early in life can protect a child for a lifetime.
Polio, which has declined by 99 percent over the past 20 years, and is now on the cusp of eradication, is a great example of the value of childhood vaccines.
On a recent trip to India I joined an immunization campaign and gave drops to children at a temple. For just 13 cents a dose, I helped protect children from a terrible disease…and contribute to one of the most successful public health campaigns in history.
