11 Nov Fighting for Breath: a call to action
Pneumonia is the world’s leading infectious killer of children, claiming the lives of more than 800,000 children under the age of five every year. It is a shocking demonstration of health inequities disproportionately affecting the most deprived and marginalised children in low- and middle-income countries. It represents a violation of children’s right to survival and development. Yet pneumonia remains a neglected disease. We can and must change this.
Every Breath Counts, UNICEF, ISGlobal and Save the Children have joined forces with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ”la Caixa” Foundation, USAID, Unitaid and Gavi to host world leaders at the Global Forum on Childhood Pneumonia in January.
World Pneumonia Day 2019 is a key moment to shine a spotlight on the biggest infectious killer of children, and to call for action from governments and other stakeholders in the lead-up to the Forum.
