“We will put an end to this epidemic.”
It is not often that a doctor gets to utter these words. But that is exactly what Marc LaForce, who directed a unique international program to combat meningitis, told Kyodo News during a visit to Korsimoro, a small village approximately 60 kilometers northeast of the Burkina Faso capital Ouagadougou.
He was talking at the tail end of a 10-year effort between the World Health Organization and the global health nonprofit organization PATH, where LaForce is a director, to develop an affordable and long-lasting vaccine for Meningitis A.
