At the International Pediatric Association (IPA), our assessment of the world’s children –- a kind of global well-child checkup -– yields both reasons for hope and causes for concern. While child deaths have decreased throughout the world in recent years even as populations have increased, nearly 9 million children under the age of five still die each year. Infectious diseases claim 68 percent of these lives, and the disease that claims the greatest number of young lives may surprise you. It’s pneumonia, killing a child every 20 seconds.
